RAY FRANK CALLAWAY 


VALDESE - Ray Frank Callaway, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008. Born in 
Lincoln County, he was the son of the late William Mitchell Callaway and 
Nellie Elizabeth Austin Callaway, and husband of the late Frances Payne 
Callaway. He was also preceded in death by a son Fred Ray Callaway; four 
sisters and seven brothers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and 
worked for many years at Celanese Development Laboratories. He was also a 
manager and did consulting at local textile plants, such as Burke Mills and 
Wamsutta Mills. He was one of the founders of International Textiles (I-Tex) 
in Icard, which was acquired by O'Mara Textiles in Rutherford College. After 
retiring, he made and sold socks at flea markets across the state, and was a 
security guard for Griffiths Security.

Survivors include a son, Gene Calloway of Morganton; a daughter, Pat 
Crutchfield of Drexel; three brothers, Joe and Jack Calloway, both of 
Lincolnton, and Ray Calloway of Stanley; four grandchildren; and five great-
grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Heritage 
Funeral Service in Valdese. The Rev. Mike Chandler officiated. Burial followed 
with military rites by American Legion Post 234 at Burke Memorial Park. The 
family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funersl home. Memorial 
donations may be made to the N.C. Textile Foundation, Attn: Ken Sigmon, 2401 
Research Drive, Box 8301, Raleigh, N.C. 27695; or Burke Hospice and Palliative
