The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 8 March 1898
On Tuesday Ralph, the 5 year old son of Mr and Mrs W H Sigman, of the vicinity
of Kiddsville, Lincoln county and grandson of Mr and Mrs A J Deer, of Cowan's
Ford, was in the field, and after the manner of the farmers, set the sedge grass
on fire with matches. His clothing caught and the child was burned so that he
died at 4 o'clock Wednesday morning, having lived about four hours.
