Potts Civil War Pension, 1901 Sarah Potts, Widow's Application ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ North Carolina Archives and History Auditor's Office Applications for Confederate Pensions (after 1901) Vol. 3, M-R Widow's Application for Pension State of North Carolina } County of Macon } On this 31st day of May A.D. 1901, personally appeared before me, John E. Rickman Justice of Peace, C.S.C., in and for the State and County aforesaid, Sarah Potts age 62 years, and a resident at Leatherman post-office in said County and State, and who, being duly sworn, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension under the provisions of an act entitled "An Act to amend chapter 198 of the Laws of 1889, for the relief of certain Confederate Soldiers and Widows," ratified March 2, 1901: That she is the widow of the late Thomas S. Potts, who enlisted in Co. A, 65th Reg. N.C. State Troops, on or about the 15th day of June, 1862, to serve in the armies of the late Confederate States. She further states that she was married to said Soldier before the first day of April, 1865, and has never re-married; that she is, and has been for twelve months immediately preceding this Application for Pension, a bona fide resident of North Carolina; that she holds no office under the United States, or under any State or County, from which she is receiving the sum of three hundred dollars as fees or as salary annually; that she is not worth in her own right, or the right of her late husband, property at its assessed value for taxation to the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), nor has she disposed of property of such value by gift or voluntary conveyance since the 11th of March, 1885. Gilbrun who resides at Leatherman post-office, in said County and State, in good standing, whom I know to be respectable and entitled to credit, and being duly sworn, say they are acquainted with Mrs. Sarah Potts, the widow of the late Thomas S. Potts, of Co. A, 65th Regiment North Carolina Troops, and that they believe her to be the identical person she represents herself to be, and that the facts set forth in her affidavit are correct to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest, direct or indirect, in this claim.
