MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPER ITEMS -- HAYESVILLE HAPPENINGS, FEB 1893 HAYESVILLE HAPPENINGS (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Feb. 8, 1893 - Vol. VII, No. 17 HAYESVILLE, CLAY CO, NC The Hayesville TIMES under the management os S. Moroney, closed some weeks ago and is now supplanted by the Hayesville ADVANCE under the control of Frank McClure, as Editor and G.H. Haigler as associate Editor. The first copy made its appearance last week which was a bright newsy sheet. The weather has been the coldest for years, so say some of the "oldest inhabitants". The thermomenter registering 21 below on the morning of the 16th inst. W.F. Johnston died some days ago at his home near this place, after an illness of several months, and was intered in the Methodist cemetery at this place. Clay has lost one of its best citizens. Pen. Jones, the greatest peddler of this country, has put up a stock of goods in the Bristol Store House. Sleigh riding has been taking the day ever since the snow. John Evans succeeded in catching one of the largest gobblers that roam the Tusquittee mountains, from the size of his foot which adorns the office of the ADVANCE. Rabbit hunting has been the order of the day since the snow, and the amount of fur scattered around some dwellings in this place and the cheerful faces worn by some, go to show that they like the meat of the animal as well as the sport of hunting. There was a prominent colored gentleman of this place who said in talking about the cold weather and thermometer that it had gone down below MISSOURI.
