MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPERS -- HIGHLANDS ITEMS,DEC 1892 HIGHLANDS ITEMS (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Dec. 7, 1892 - Vol. VII, No. 8 HIGHLANDS, MACON CO., NC The Mountain EAGLE has suspended, which Highlands regret. Our population is too limited at this time, to support a paper so near the county seat. The editor has made a valiant fight, but the odds were too great, yet through his paper he has shown himself to be devoted to Highlands and her interests. As the Mountain EAGLE retires from the field, Editor Harbison may feel that his efforts in journalism are appreciated by his fellow town men, and that its failure is in no way due to himself. Dr. Charles L. Frost, who came to the polls on election day in a carriage to vote, had not been to town for nine months. The judges of election went tot he carriage and received his vote. At times he seems better and takes his seat at the table, but afterwards he suffers much pain. He chooses to receive no medical attention and takes no medicine. The Doctor is a most entertaining gentleman. few in life time have seen so much of the world as he. He went to California in the year 1849 and he has been called out to pronounce on the death of men hung by vigilance committees. He was once in the United States service, but his regiment fought the Indians. A wounded Indian lying on the field, as the Doctor stepped over him, thrust an arrow into his leg. For this act of pertidy hte Indian's life was brief. For this wound which ocassionally gives him trouble, he is entitled to a surgeon's pension, but he never would apply for it. - Ex. Mayor Salleck has returned from York State, where he has spent the past five months. He is in good health and glad to get back to old Macon. - Mr. Frank H. Hill has sold his farm to a Mr. Norris is a fine young man, and Horse Cove gains an excellent citizen. - Maj. Thompson's wife is in poor health this winter. - At the election for town officers last Monday, Theron D. Walden was elected Mayor, and John J. Smith, Dr. O. Farrell, James Rideout, and S.T. kelsey, Jr., were elected commissioners. - Two of the commissioners tied. Their names were put into a hat and shaken up, and the one drawn out was declared elected.
