MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPER ITEMS -- HIGHLANDS ITEMS, JAN 1893a HIGHLANDS ITEMS (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Jan. 11, 1893 - Vol. VII, No. 13 HIGHLANDS, MACON CO., NC A dreadful accident occurred last week at the Glades, Ga., a settlement a few miles east of Horse cove. Mr. Wm. M. Pell took down his gun and went out near the house to shoot a rabbit. He fired once and hastily dropped his gun to load again, the other barrel having been heavily loaded to shoot a hog. As the gun went to the ground, the loaded barrell fired and the charge entered his side, making a terrible wound. His wife looked out on hearing the report and saw him staggering. She ran to him, and by the time she reached him he had fallen. She called to some neighbors who lived close by, and then took his head in her lap, asking if he had shot himself, he slightly inclined his head and soon after expired. Mr. Pell was an industrious and well to do farmer, a member of the M.E. Church, South, and one who had heart and hand in every good word and work. He will be sadly missed. His wife was a Miss Walker, of Clay county, NC. - Mr. Burt Rideout, who returned home from Christmas, has been confined to the house for a few days with an attack supposed to be the grippe. - Mr. Frank Smith, of Asheville, who has been visiting his sister, Mrs. Rideout, has returned home. - Mr. Richard Polson, of Boston, is visiting his sister, Mrs. Henry Stwart, Jr. - Rev. Henry Emmons and wife are spending the winter with their daughter, Mrs. Esq. Wells. - We noticed ex-solicitor Moody on our streets one day last week. - Mayor Walden and the newly elected commissioners assumed their duties on the 2nd inst. - The Ayrshire bull brought to this town by Messrs. White, Wells, and Neely about five years ago, has resulted in the raising of some fine heifers remarkable for milk. The bull is pure bred, and from the finest family of milkers in the United States. He is from the imported stock of teh Massachusetts Agricultural College. From him and a good native cow, Mr. White has a heifer that is a deep milker, and has produced a good supply of butter this winter on hay alone. Mr. E.A. Babcock also has a cow of the same stock, and he has Jerseys and half Jerseys but says his Ayrshire is of more value and profit than any two Jerseys he has. They are hearty and hardy, and seem to be adapted to this mountain region. BX ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
