MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPER ITEMS -- HIGHLANDS ITEMS, JAN 1893b HIGHLANDS ITEMS (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Jan. 25, 1893 - Vol. VII, No. 15 HIGHLANDS, MACON CO., NC Our township is snowed underwith snow 13 inches deep. On account of the absence of wind it is not badly drifted. It has been very cold however. The lowest here in the village has been 8 below zero. The cold has continued uninteruptedly since CHristmas, and much of the time has been playing about zero. The mail riders have suffered, many of them being thinly clad for such cold weather. Those who have properly protected have made their trips. One rider by name of Teague, whose horse gave out, packed the mail on his back four miles up the Blue Ridge to Highlands, bringing two paper sacks which weighed about 80 lbs. Mr. Teague says much of the way he had to push his horse through the snow. Since then Mr. Bascom, with his accustomed energy, has put the Highlands mail off most of the time in a light buggy with two horses, and some of the time a pair of hoses, rider in the saddle and leading the other. The Chattooga river at the Ga., and SC line, was frozen over so it could be crossed on foot, a thing never known by any of the inhabitants along the river. Several sleighs have been fixed up and several sleigh rides have been indulged in by our people. Postmaster Coe is receiving the praise of our citizens for his determination in keeping the mails moving, which has been done where mail bags could be got at. Mr. William Munger has built a sled, which he keeps constantly running. He says it is so easy to handle logs and wood with a slad. SUch a season of snow and cold does not often come, so it is a theme of conversation with everyone. BX ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
