MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPERS -- HIGHLANDS NOTES, JUNE 1891 HIGHLANDS NOTES (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, June 3, 1891 - Vol. VI, No. 11 HIGHLANDS, MACON CO., NC - Capt. C.A. Boynton was taken sick with the grippe on the day he returned from court, and his family were taken down about the same time, and it has been a very sick family. Mr. and Mrs. Bascom were taken with the disease about the same time. It is a singular disease spreading so rapidly and affecting so many at the same time. - Dr. C.D. Smith, of Franklin, came to town last week and remained over Sunday. It was not known he would remain over the Sabbath till late on Saturday. Several expressed a wish to hear him preach, and Rev. Mr. Edwards of the Methodist Episcopal Church kindly relinquished his pulpit for Dr. Smith. He preached from Eph. 3:14-21. The discourse created profound feeling and was one of the most remarkable sermons ever preached in Highlands. - The frosts of early May killed most of the fruit in this locality. Highlands should depend on grass and not put much land to fruit. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
