MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPER ITEMS -- HIGHLANDS ITEMS, NOV 1893 HIGHLANDS ITEMS (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Nov. 1, 1893 - Vol. VIII, No.3 HIGHLANDS, MACON CO., NC - John Jay Smith had twenty fine acres in corn this year and he has a fine crop up here in the mountains. Mr. Smith says this is the most profitable country to farm in his knowed of, and he has farmed in Illinois and Indiana. Rye and wheat are always in good demand, and corn he can get 90cts and a dollar for it in the summner, in the Highlands market, while in eht ewest thirty and thirty-five cents is the best that can be done with corn. Mr. Smith thinks capital invested in farming here would bring sure returns. - The masonic festival was a success socially and financially. - Miss Laura Fox of Ellijay was voted the prettiest girl. Miss Fox is tall, slender, witha fair complexion, and pink cheeks, with dark hair in wavy curls. So this must be considered Highlands idea of female beauty. - Mr. E. Sellect has been surveying with the object of getting the best grade for a road to Franklin. A road to Franklin of easy grade is ardently desired by every thoughtful Highlander. - A good deal of interest is being centered on the fact that Bishop Cheshire will be here on the 7th and 8th of November. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
