MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPERS -- HIGHLANDS ITEMS, SEPT 1892 HIGHLANDS ITEMS (Local Affairs) PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Sept. 28, 1892 - Vol. VII, No. 28 HIGHLANDS, MACON CO., NC - Dr. Charles L. Frost, who has been confined tot he house sick for the past six months, was out last week visiting his pond and looking over his improvements which are constantly kept up. - Miss Laura G. Kibbee was united in wedlock to Prof. Thomas C. Reese, on September 6th, at Asheville, by one of the leading Baptist preachers there. Miss Kibbee's friends here made her some beautiful presents. The happy pair departed immediately for Abingdon, Va., where they will engage in teaching. Prof. Reese is of Henderson Co., and Mrs. Reese is the daughter of Dr. George W. Kibbee, who sacrificed his life in his efforts to help the yellow fever sufferers at New Orleans in 1878. - James A. Rideout, T.D. Walden, J. Heacock and H.M. Paul are in Washington, attending the great G.A.R reunion. Mr. Rideout in a note said as he wrote Comrade Walden was up a lamp post, playing a French harp, while Comrade Paul was dancing on the pavement below. - Mr. Walden is the sedate master of Blue Ridge Lodge, and Mr. Paul another worthy gray beard. - Miss Burnie DUrgin is clerking at the Post Office. - Mr. Leslie Rideout proposes to continue his studies in medicine, at Baltimore, this fall and winter. - Rev. S.C. Kennedy, of Fla., Congregationalist, is occupying the Presbyterian pulpit for a few Sundays. - Dr. Harley Lyle was in town this week on professional business. - Mr. Stephen Porter and wife paid Highlands friends a visit last week. He reports Andrews making a sure growth. The towns on the railroads of Western NC are sure of future greatness, and those who are careful to select a locality where either mineral or farming lands abound, are sure sometime to reap a rich reward. - The political campaign was opened on the 20th, by Messrs. Crawford and Pritchard. The school house was filled with listeners from all over the township. We noticed Maj. Higdon and Frank Ray, Esq, as careful lookers on.
