A. Jones returned from Raleigh Monday. - Solicitor Geo. A Jones went to Raleigh last week on business. - Edward J. Ames, of Baltimore, was at the Allman House Friday and Saturday. - Mr. T.B. Higdon moved to Ellijay Monday. We shall miss him in Franklin. - Hon. Roger Q. Mills has been re-elected to the United States Senate from Texas. - The new Democratic Governor Altgeld, of Illinois, is in Asheville at the Battery Park. - The North Carolina legislature very appropriately adjourned on receiving news of Mr. Blaine's death. - Governor Elias Carr, though a strictly moral man does not belong to any church. His wife belongs to the Episcopal church. - Through the kindness of Mr. H.H. Mashburn we acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to attend the 58th anniversary exercises of Wake Forest College on the 17th of February. - Married Jany. 26th, at the residence of Mr. Thompson, of Horse Cove, Mr. Zebulon Alley, of Jackson County, to Miss Cora Davis, of Clay county, Rev. D.H. Comann officiating. - The Franklin Library Club meets at 7:30 o'clock next Friday evening, being Feb 3rd, at the residence of Mr. R.L. Porter. All of the members are requested to attend and pay their monthly dues. - Mr. D.C. Cunningham who left home last week with sixteen head, of mules and six horses, telegraphed from Spartanburg, SC., Monday that he had sold his mules, but had horses still on hand. - Owing to the inclement weather the presiding elder, Rev. J.C. Rowe, did not come to the quarterly meeting at Iotla at the time appointed, but the meeting will be held at Snow Hill next Saturday and Sunday and it is expected that it will be protracted. PHILLIPS BROOKS DEAD Boston, Mass., Jan. 23 -- Bishop Phillips Brooks died at 6:30 this morning, of heart failure. It was quite unexpected, the bishop having been sick only since Thursday. JUSTICE L.Q.C. LAMAR DEAD Macon Ga., Jan. 24 -- Justice Lucius Quintius Cincinnatus Lamar died here at 8:50 o'clock last evening of Bright's disease.
