MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPERS -- LOCAL AFFAIRS, JUNE 1893 LOCAL AFFAIRS PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, June 28, 1893 - Vol. VII, No. 37 - Harvest. - Toilet soaps at the drug store. - The weather has been delightful this week. - The Hiwassee Times has yielded up the ghost. - Miss Nora Deal visited Miss Maggie Love at Waynesville last week. - Capt. J.W. Terrell, of Webster, came over Saturday and returned Monday. - Hon. L.J. Smith, of Jackson county, was in town a day or two of the past week. - W.H. Hughes, Register of Deeds of Jackson county, was in town last Saturday. - Hon. J.G. Tatham, of Robbinsville, was in town from Saturday to yesterday. - The carrier pigeon that came to Franklin last week likes the town so well that he has taken up his abode here. - A considerable number of strangers have been in town this week to see Hon. K. Elias on important business. - I need what you owe me. -- W.T. POTTS - Mrs. N.P. Rankin and daughter, Miss Lily, returned from an extended visit to friends in Guilford county, last Saturday. - Mr. W.H. Waldroop and his sister, Jennie, of Hunnicutt, Tenn., came in Monday on a visit to their parents and friends. - The Asheville Citizen is clucking over a two-headed turkey that somebody has presented to the editor. It was dead hatched though. - Capt. Jacob Fulmer and wife, of the Western North Carolina R.R. were visiting Mr. E.K. Cunningham's family over Sunday. - A carrier pigeon spent some time in town Thursday evening. it had a ring on its leg, but it was a little too shy to be closely interviewed. - Mr. Thomas Ransom, son of Senator M.W. Ransom, came home with Hon. K. Elias, last Thursday and spent a day or two in Franklin. - Henry Robertson left Monday morning for Tennessee to engage in some business for a Chicago company and will be absent during the summer. - Be it known far and wide that the PRESS will take wheat at cash prices in exchange for subscription. - Lightning struck the residence of Mr. G.W. Sanderson in Hayesville last Friday doing some damage to the roof and slightly stunning his wife and daughter. - Franklin seems to have taken on a strong fascination to strangers from many counties since the return of Mr. Elias [Hon. Kope Elias] from Washington, to the great delight of our liverymen. - Thomas B. Shepherd, professional barber, at the Franklin House - on Wednesdays and saturdays. Neat and good work. - Profs. Geo. H. Williams and J.V. Lewis, of the State Geological survey, are in Macon now for a three weeks' survey in their line. They left Frankln yesterday for Highlands. - Messrs. Kinsland and Berry, of Millshoal, returning from the mountains Thursday where they had been looking after their stock, passed through town with a swarm of bees in a sack. - The addition to St. Agnes' School is approaching completion, and will give several additional rooms to the building, adding very materially to the appearance and the convenience of the school. - Messrs. David Norton, H.L. Rideout, H.M. Bascom, and Mrs. Dr. Frost, and Mrs. F.C. hill, of Highlands, came down Wednesday on business concerning the estate of Dr. Frost and returned Thursday. - We are pleased to learn that a Macon boy, Elias D. White, of Highlands, received the second prize in the Oratorical contest at the Massachusettes Agricultural college at the commencement, June 19th. - Hon. M.O. Sherrill, of Catawba county, was in town over Sunday and attended Sunday school and preaching at the Methodist church. Mr. Sherrill has served in btoh branches of the General Assembly and appears to be a very intelligent gentlemen. - Dr. C.D. Smith attended church last Sunday for the first time since his accident last fall. His many friends were very glad to see him out and to see him looking so well, so far as his general health is concerned. - B.R. Smathers (Dentist) from Waynesville, N.C., will be in Franklin, N.C., July 11, 12, and 13, 1893. Any one who may desire my serives will please meet me on one of the above days. - Rev. Dan Atkins will preach in the Methodist church next Sunday. On account of his former acquaintaince, his ability as a preacher and the hosts of friends he has in Macon county, he will no doubt have a large congregation. - Rev. J.A. Deal left last Saturday morning for Cullowhee and Sylva where he held services Sunday, and has gone this week to Raleigh to attend the Episcopal convention which elects an assistant bishop for the diocese of North Carolina. - The PRESS office is not a suitable place for loafing "kids". They hinder our typos and annoy us in our work, besides causing trouble by their meddlesome habits, and we will take it as a special favor if they will make themselves scarce in our sanctum in future. - Hm. Kope Elias and family went to Hayesville Saturday and returned yesterday. Mr. Elias was looking after business on his farm near Hayesville, which was very necessary on account of his long absence from home, and before his leaving for Asheville. - Dr. S.H. Lyle, assisted by Dr. John J. Moore, performed a very delicate and importan surgical operation on a Mrs. Davis, of South Carolina, last Friday at the residence of Mr. Thos. Price on East Main street. Mrs. Davis is doing very well since the operation. - Hon. Kope Elias left for his home at Franklin, Macon county, this morning. He will return to Asheville the latter part of next week to take charge of the collector's office. His $280,000 land was made up here yesterday and sent to Washington on the afternoon train. -- CITIZEN. - We regret to learn from the Cherokee SCOUT that Wm. P. Berry, one of the oldest resident citizens of Cherokee county, died last week at the home of his brother near Long Ridge. Mr. Berry served through the war in the same company with the editor of the PRESS, and was man of good character. - Rev. J.C. Rowe held his third quarterly meeting for the Franklin Station on Saturday and SUnday and preached several sermons with <> ability. The citizens of town, and especially those who belong to the methodist church could show much more appreciation and do themselves immense credit by giving larger congregations on the Saturday quarterly meeting occassions. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
