MACON COUNTY, NC -- NEWSPAPERS -- LOCAL AFFAIRS, SEPT 1893a LOCAL AFFAIRS PUBLISHED IN THE FRANKLIN PRESS, Sept. 13, 1893 - Vol. VII, No. 48 - Henry Stuart, Jr., has opened up a law office in the Love office building, and has taken board at Mrs. Love's. - It has been assertained that near 800 lives were lost in the storm along the South Carolina coast on the 28th, inst. - Lawrence Patton, of Clay County, has been visiting his brothers and other friends in Macon during the past week. - Misses Belle Rogers and Allie Calor, two of Franklin's witsome lassies, enlivened our sactum for a short while Saturday. - Mr. Will Enloe and his sister Minnie expect to leave ina day or two for Young Harris, Ga., to enter college at that place. - Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Tallent, of Iotla, had the misfortune to lose their four months old child that died last Thursday morning. - We learn that Mr. Hightower Curtis, of Smith's Bridge, died last Saturday night, and was buried at Asbury church Monday. - Mr. W.H. Waldroop and his sister Jennie left Thursday for their home at Hunnicutt, Tenn., after spending two months among friends here. - There are thirty-six business enterprises in Franklin, but only seven of them advertise in the PRESS, and yet some men look for progress. - Senator John B. Gordon and Hon. W.T. Crawford had favored us with copies of their speeches on the silver question delivered in Congress. - Some of our subscribers can settle by bringing us some wood, and a good time is to bring it before the roads get bad and the weather gets cold. - Mr. J.F. Williams came over from Asheville the first of last week and his family arrived last Saturday. They will make Franklin their home in future. - Married, Tuesday, Sept. 12th, 1893, 12 o'clock a.m., at the residence of L.H. Enloe, Esq., Mr. Frank Bidwell to Miss Lula Enloe, Rev. D.H. Comann officiating. - Mrs. K. Elias went to Asheville last Thursday to spend till MOnday with Collector Elias and then join a Franklin party and go to Chicago to visit the World's Fair. - Solicitor Geo. A. Jones came home Sunday evening from Transylvania court, and reported Judge Armfield sick and not able to open court last Monday at Waynesville. - A new corundum vein has been opened within one mile and a half of Franlin, on land belonging to Capt. A.P. Munday and Joe Calloway, that promises good results. - We want it distinctly understood that the PRESS office is no suitable place for loafing "kids" to congregate and hinder our typos from their work, and meddle with things about which they know nothing, and which do not concern them. - A.S. Bryson, wife and son; N.L. Barnard, son and daughter; Lewis and Isabel Elias, J.O. Harrison and Dr. S.H. Lyle left Monday for the World's Fair. Collector and Mrs. K. Elias joined the party at Asheville. - We learn that the Tuckaseege river was on a swell Sunday and broke the boom of the LUmber Company at Dillsboro, and let about 1,000 logs pass down the river. The waters were up so as to prevent the mail coming over from Dllsboro Monday. - We learn that Rev. Richard Turner, who has been stopping for some time at the Franklin House, is now engaged in teaching a school on Ellijay. He had the misfortune while returning from Dillsboro a few days ago to lose his pocket-book containing about sixty-five dollars. - Asheville Citizen: Mrs. M.I. Siler of Franklin, Collector Elias' mother-in-law, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Penland, on Penland Street. - C.C. Daniels, esq., of Franklin, reached here this morning, and left this afternon for the Cherokee strip which is to be opened for settlement next week. He goes as a prospector on professoinal lines, and will become a resident of Oklahoma, or the new territory, if he finds the inducements encouraging. - The Press, Franklin, NC., August 30, says "Mr. Turner, a Baptist minister from Spartanburg, S.C., preached a good sermon in the Methodist church to a large and attentive congregation last Sunday." - Who is Mr. Turner? That is the question that was first suggested to us. On inquiry we ascertained that he was Richard Turner, grandson of Henry Abbot. He began preaching several years agoand has been living most of his time in North Carolina. Those who know him say he is a worthy good man. --SPARTAN. A CHILD'S DEATH --------------- We regret to announce the death of little Harvey Bailey Comann, the child of Rev. and Mrs. D.H. Comann, who died Sunday morning shortly after midnight, after a long protracted illness. He was buried Monday evening by the side of his little twin brother that died a few months ago. He was something less than two years of age. The bereaved parents have the sympathies of our people in their sad affliction. Rev. J.C. Rowe conducted the funeral services. WAYNESVILLE ----------- The insulator pin factory is temporarily shut down till there is a better demand for pins. Mr. Frank Poindexter is able to get out again. It is thought by Congressman Crawford that the Senate will repeal the SHerman law at once. Mr. and Mrs. John Schanks, the verable parents of our townsman, S.P. Schanks, are over from Asheville visiting their son. Mr. S has seen the frost of 83 winters. Rev. J.A. SPeight, until lately editor of the Asheville Baptist, came over last Friday night to turn over the Asheville Baptist to his successors. The printing will be done here in future and the paper this week presents a pleasing appearance. With the long list of contributors it should succeed admirably. -- COURIER WHITTIER -------- The new Congregational church at Whittier will be dedicated by Rev. C.J. Ryder, D.D. of New York, on Wednesday, 27th inst, at 11 o'clock A.M. The high school to be run at Whittier by the AMerican Missionary Association will begin on the 27th, and $1,000 has been appropriated to the school for this year. A fine school is expected.
