MACON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - ALEX BROWN, MAY 26, 1891 Published in the Franklin Press, June 3, 1891 - Vol. VI, No. 11 HOMICIDE Alex Brown was stabbed and instantly killed at Hiwassee, Ga., on the 26th ult., by John Wood. They were attending the Commencement exercises of the Hiwassee High School, and there being an old grudge between them on account of some former difficulty, Brown invited Wood to go out of town with him and settle the difference. About one-fourth mile from the court house, they engaged in a fight and Brown was killed. Wood was arrested at his home four miles from town and on a preliminary trial was held to answer the charge of murder before the superior court. He claims that he acted in self-defense. Wood also received an ugly wound below the right eye. They were not students of Hiwassee High School as stated in some of our exchanges. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
