MACON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - COL. WILLIAM THOMAS, MAY 12, 1893 Published in the Franklin Press, May 17, 1893 - Vol. VII, No. 31 DEATH OF COLONEL WILLIAM THOMAS Canton, N.C., May 12 - Colonel William Thomas, one of the best known men in North Carolina, and whose home has been in Jackson County, died today. His career has been one of the most remarkable ever known in the state. He was born and reared in Jackson (then part of Haywood) County and got his education by burning pine knots for lights. He possessed a most powerful intellect and his advice was sought on questions of public importance. It was through his direct influence that the practicability of building a railroad in western North Carolina was demonstrated, when the state was induced to undertake the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad. Several years ago, Colonel Thomas became insane on account of excessive mental strain and has since been confined in the asylum at Morganton, where he died. No one has been more closely indentified with the development with the state, particularly the western portion, and no one is better known than the deceased chieftain. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
