MADISON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARY - Mabel Ball, 9 Nov 1912 ----¤¤¤¤---- Asheville-Citizens Times Microfilm page 16 11-15-1912 ACCIDENT Last Saturday evening a fatal accident occurred at the railroad crossing on Bridge street. Miss. Mabel Ball, daughter of James and Celia Ball had come to town from Bailey Branch to Change a pair of shoes. After having done this she was returning home and was crossing the rail road when a through freight train came down the road and struck her killing her instantly. She was thrown 90 feet falling on the sand at the foot of the wall. Death was instant. Her body was removed to the rail road station and afterward was taken home. The mother was not at home when the news came to her and when she heard rushed to town to see the daughter who but a few hours before was alive and had been sent to town. All the sisters and brothers were summoned and came Saturday evening and Sunday. There was a service on Sunday afternoon at the house and the burial was at the Ball graveyard on Monday at 11 o'clock. This death was especially sad. Mabel was but 15 years old when killed and was a very attractive child. She was very obedient and willing and all who knew her loved her. Rev. T. J. Graham conducted the service. The crossing is very dangerous and the News Record has called attention many times to the need of some preventative for this. Now is the time to ask that the railroad do something to avoid such accidents in the future. We hope something may be done right away. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
