MADISON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARY - G. M. Buckner, 22 Oct 1929 ----¤¤¤¤---- Asheville Citizens Microfilm page 121 8-18-1929 Mr. G. M. Buckner of Big Laurel Dies after months of pain and suffering Mr. G. M. Buckner died at his home Tuesday morning, October 22, 1929, between one and two o'clock at about the age of 66 years. Mr. Buckner was believed to be getting well, as on Saturday he carried down a load of wood, then that night he became worse until he died. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Rhoda Buckner; seven daughters and one son, as follows; also two brothers; Mrs. Woodard Holband, Mrs. Collis Chandler, Mrs. Jim Chandler, Mrs. Oscar Buckner, of Big Laurel; Mrs. Malinda Bullman and Mrs Otto Massey, of Asheville, N. C.; Mrs. Sarah Gentry of White Rock, N. C.; Mr. Floyd Buckner, his only son, who was on a trip to Texas when death called his father; Mr. Noah Buckner of Big Laurel; and Will Buckner, of Oklahoma, his two brothers. Mr. Buckner was one of the oldest citizens of Big Laurel church, and was a faithful Christian throughout his life and was always ready to do any and everything in his power for the upbuilding of the church and Sunday School as long as he was able, being ready at all times to urge others to go, also. Mr Buckner always lived on a farm and was a remarkable man in many ways. As a whole his life was one terific battle with the disadvantages of farming in these old hills or mountains of ours; nevertheless, God loves the common people. If men would cease to worry, and women cease to sigh, and all be glad to whoever has to die. But friends, why weep---he is not dead; his spirit lives with God, his likeness lives in the face of his children; and his memory lives in the hearts of all who knew him. Funeral services were held at his home on Wednesday by Rev. Lark Roberts, and the remains were laid to rest in the Lewis graveyard on Big Laurel. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
