MADISON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARY - Rev. John Nelson Coates, 17 Nov 1930 ----¤¤¤¤---- Asheville Citizens Newspaper Date: 11-21-1930 Microfilm page 145 Rev. John Nelson Coates, a well known farmer and minister of the Gospel, died at his home Monday morning, November 17. He had been a sufferer for several months, and very ill for four weeks. He had reached the age of 57 years. Born and reared in Madison County, he had been a Christian man from the age of 23, and had been a minister of the Gospel for 20 years. Funeral services, which were in charge of the Rev. N. H. Griffin, pastor of the deceased, and Rev. Cecil Reece, were held at Walnut Creek Baptist church Tuesday morning. The large number of people present for the funeral and the many floral offerings bespoke the love and esteem in which the deceased was held. Surviving are the wife, who before her marriage was Miss Bell Riddle, and five children as follows; Mrs. Jack Banks of Old Fort, N. C., Mrs. Fred Kent of Marshall, Delphia, Eloise, and Dora L. Coates; also 10 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Henry Arrington, of Asheville, and one brother, Mr. C. C. Coates of Marshall He will be greatly missed by his many friends.
