MADISON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARY - Earl Lewis, 15 Mar 1935 ----¤¤¤¤---- Asheville Citizens Newspaper Date: 4-3-1935 Microfilm page 223 Mr. Earl Lewis, World's War Veteran, Taken By Death After several years of failing health, Earl Lewis, age 40 years, died at his home in the Grape Vine section, March 15, 1935. His death was caused by tuberculosis of the hip and kidneys. Mr. Lewis was born Dec. 25, 1894, at Big Laurel, N. C. He was an active member of the Baptist church of Big Laurel. He was married June, 1925 to Effie Rice. Born to their union is one living daughter, Willie Mae Lewis. He was an outstanding and useful citizen to his community. He was well known for the beautiful service he rendered to his country during the World's War. The exposure he received during the war was the direct cause of his death. Two funeral services were held for Mr. Lewis, one at the Grape Vine Baptist church with the Rev. Everett Sprinkle officiating, the other at the old family cemetery on Big Laurel, where the burial was held, the Rev. N. H. Griffin officiating. Mr. Dedrick Bowman, of the Marshall undertaking department, had charge of the burial. Flower girls for Mr. Lewis were Mrs. Roy Rice, Mrs. Ernest {P?D?]eck, Edna West, Mildred Tolley, Ilene Morgan, Lola Boone, Lena Mae Rice, Fay Shelton, Iness Shelton. Pallbearers were: T. M. Cargile, Abe Coates, Van Wallin, Oss West, Lloyd West, George Bruce, Roy Rice, Ernest Peek, Horace Sams, Neal Cody, Mike Sprinkle, Coy Gosnell, Jack Rice, Claude West, John Tolley, and Horace Rice. Surviving the deceased are his widow and one daughter, and six brothers, G. M. Lewis, James Lewis, of Crewe, Va., John Lewis, Theodore Lewis, Harrison Lewis and Steve Lewis, all of Big Laurel, N.
