MADISON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARY - George Washington Odell, 22 Nov 1926 ----¤¤¤¤---- Obit 1926 Odell -Asheville Citizens Newspaper George Washington Odell was the son of Mr. And Mrs. George Odell. He was born in Madison Co., NC near Marshall. His parents died when he was a small child, and for a time he made his home with his uncle. When his sister, Mrs. H. K. Ramsey was married, he came to live with her, and her home was his home for the rest of his life. He received his education in the schools at Walnut Springs, Hot Springs and the Asheville Farm School, graduating at the latter institution in 1914. After his graduation, he managed a store at Redmond for his brother-in-law, II. K. Ramsey until the United States entered the World War. At this time he went to Washington, D. C. where he was employed by the Government until after Armistice. His physical condition precluded the possibility of his entering into active military service. On his return from Washington he took a course in Cecil's Business College in Asheville. He filled the position as bookkeeper with the Grace Supply Company and with the Carolina Creamery Company for a time, then accepted a position with the Carolina Power and Light Company. He was one of the bookkeepers with the latter company at the time of his death. The esteem in which his work was held by the company was evidenced by a material increase in salary to have taken effect the day of his death. This was his fourth advance since he had been in the employ of this company. While at the Farm School, Mr. Odell united with the Presbyterian Church, while in Washington he transfered his membership to the southern Methodist Church, holding it there until his death. Mr. Odell was a young man of exceptional and exemplary character. He was quiet, industrious and ever willing to render any service possible to those about him. He was of a sunny disposition and made and kept many friends wherever he went. His death was a sad blow to all who knew him. Funeral services for Mr. Odell were held at his late home near Marshall on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 24, burial was in the family plot on the Ramsey farm. Services were in charge of Ref. J. A. Martin, of Marshall assisted b y Rev. R. S. Woodson. Attending the services from a distance were, Nelt Odell and sons, Fred, Arthur, Walter and Mack Plemmons from Lockhart, S. C., Sylvan Shaw and son, Ralph, Laman Odell from Greenville, Tenn., Mr. and Mrs. Riley Odell, Hot Springs, Hugh Odell, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Payne, Mrs. Dora Edwards, Miss Bonnie Edwards, Hugh and Byron Edwards and number of the members of the office staff of Carolina Power and Light Company. Pallbearers were Arthur, Hugh and Walter Odell, Mack Plemmons, Jesse Burnett and R. S. Woodson. In memory of George W. Odell, who passed away November 22, 1926 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. B Payne, 68 Galax Ave., West Asheville. Mr. Odell was affectionately known by his friends as "Wash," and he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He came to Asheville several years ago and has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Payne until the time of his death, although, for the past year he had been boarding in Asheville to be near his work but even then, Mr. and Mrs. Payne's home was his home, and the day he was taken so seriously ill, and when his suffering became so intense that he must give up his work and go to his boarding house, he requested that he be taken at once to Mrs. Payne's, saying, "She knows how to take care of me better than anyone else." His request was carried out, and Mr. and Mrs. Payne were constantly at his bedside, day and night, doing all that could possibly be done to relieve his suffering, but in this case as in all others, "god's" will, not ours be done," and he peacefully passed away at 10 a.m., Monday, November 22. This next part can not be read.....He would call Mrs. Payne "mother," his own mother having passed away when he was quite a little boy. And when his last hours on earth came, he still remembered their value and appreciated all they did for him. Just a short time before he passed away, he presented the hand of Mrs. Payne, who was sitting by him, administering to his every want and need, and said: 'mother, I will soon be gone." These were almost his last words. Dear friend of our heart and home!
