MADISON COUNTY, NC - OBITUARY - Tom Rice, 15 Oct 1929 ----¤¤¤¤---- Asheville Citizens Newspaper Date: 10-25-1929 Microfilm page 134 Mr. Tom Rice, age 66, died at his home near Marshall bout three o'clock Tuesday afternoon, October 15, 1929. For the last several years Mr. Rice has been in feeble health but about five weeks ago he was taken ill with cancer of the liver, which was incurable. We feel sure everything was done that possibly could be done to prolong life but Tuesday afternoon God said he had suffered long enough, and came and took him away. He bore his suffering patiently until the end. Mr. Rice is survived by the widow and ten children, four sons and six daughters. The sons are Thurman, of Marshall, Curtis and Kellie of Asheville, and Jonah of Marshall; the daughters are Mrs. Jesse Bishop, Mrs. Earlie Green, Mrs. Herbert Reece, Nola, Minnie, and Stella, all of Marshall. He is also survived by four brothers, Jack Rice of Greenville, Tenn., Jim Rice of Mars Hill; Elisha Rice of Weaverville, and Spencer Rice of Marshall; and several grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. L. C. Roberts of Marshall and Rev. Perry Sprinkle of Asheville, Wednesday, at 3:00 P. M. from the Grand View Baptist church of which he was an active member. Special music was rendered by the Tomberlin Brothers Quartette of Asheville. The interment followed at the Grand View Cemetery. The pallbearers were his nephews, Melvin Rice, Murphy Rice, Wesley Rice, Kenneth Rice, Everett Rice, and Biard Rice.
