All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Ann Broadbent goscote@aol.com June 12, 2006, 1:47 pm Revolutionary War Pension Application JAMES MEDFORD #9411 North Carolina Vol.1 pg. 254 State of North Carolina Martin County On this day personally appeared before me FERGUS LOWE one of the justices of the Peace for said county- JAMES MEDFORD a resident of the said state & county who being first sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7 1832. That he was drafted for 3 months service in the Revolutionary War at Williamston in said county & went to the South under the command of Capt. JOHN JONES & Lieut JAMES JONES. He was marched through various places finally to Charleston in South Carolina and after falling into the main army he was under the command of Col. ETHERINGTON. He was with the baggage waggons at the Battle of Bruiry ? Creek being prevented from joining that engagement by sickness. Although only drafted for three months he was not discharged until after the expiration of four months. He was drafted a second time & placed under the Command of Capt. CROWELL of Halifax and was marched through the upper part of this state to Camden in South Carolina. The commanding field officers were Col. READ and Maj. WEBB. He was in a little skirmish with the British at Santee River. He was then marched back to North Carolina and was within a mile of the battleground at Guilford Court House proceeding to the assistance of our forces when they were met by the American troops retreating. From this place he was marched to Wilmington in this state and at the expiration of four months he was discharged. He received written discharges both times. The first by whom he does not recollect. the last he "thinks" by Major POINTER. He knows no person by whom he can establish his service except the affidavits hereto annexed. He was born and raised in this county and is now 75 years old. He hereby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present & orders that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn & established before me his this 18th day of March 1833 JAMES X MEDFORD FERGUS LOW mark The undersigned Justice of the Peace for said county do hereby certify that JAMES MEDFORD who makes the above affidavit & declaration is an infirm old man and by reason of bodily infirmity is incapable of travelling to Court. FERGUS LOW We THOMAS PRICE, JOHN S.HYMAN & JAMES MAYO hereby certify that we are all well acquainted with JAMES MEDFORD who has described and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be about 75 years old, that he is respected and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion. HYMAN J.L.MAYO The said FERGUS LOWE a Justice of the Peace for said county does hereby declare his opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogations prescribed by the War Department, that the afore named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states, 8 months and the said FERGUS LOWE further certifies that it appears to him that the persons who have subscribed & sworn to the annexed affidavit are residents of said county are creditble persons and that their statements ____ to credit. He further certifies that it is not convenient for the applicant to procure the certificate of a clergyman. Given under my hand this 9 day of April 1833 FERGUS LOWE State of North Carolina Martin County I THOMAS W WATTS Clerk of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Session, for said county do hereby certify that FERGUS LOWE whose signature is attached to the foregoing papers, which is geniune is an acting Justice of the Peace for said County and that full faith & credit ought to be given to his official acts. In testimony where of I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the seal of said County this 9th of April 1833 THOMAS W WATTS North Carolina JAMES MEDFORD of Martin County in the State of North Carolina who was a private in the ___ command by Captain ____of the Regt command by Col. READ on the North Carolina lines for 8 months. Inscribed on the roll of North Carolina at the rate of $28.66 per annum to commence on the 4th day of March 1831.
