Martin County, NC - James Ross Revolutionary War Pension, 1832 ~~~~~~~~~~ April 21, 1933 Mrs. J.W. Dunlap Ansonville, NC Dear Madam: By request of Honorable Josiah William Bailey you are herein furnished the Revolutionary War records of James Ross. The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim W.5722 based upon the military service of James Ross. He was born June 8, 1761 in Martin County, North Carolina. The names of his parents were not given. While living in Martin County, North Carolina, he enlisted and served as private with the North Carolina troops as follows: from sometime in February 1781, to sometime in July 1781, under Captains John Kennedy and James Evans in Colonel Whitmill Hill's Regiment and was in the battle of Guilford Court House and the battle of Camden in April 1781; from sometime in August 1781 to sometime in December 1781, in Captain Ballard's Company in Colonel May's or Eaton's and Colonel Sewell's Regiments; from sometime in January 1782 until sometime in October 1782, in Captain George Cockburn's Company in Colonel Whitmill Hill's Regiment. He was allowed pension on his application executed October 10, 1832 at which time he was living in Anson County, North Carolina having moved there in 1798 or 1799 from Martin County. James Ross died January 1, 1849. This soldier married about 1781 or 1782 in Martin County, North Carolina, Lydia or Liddy Coburn and the marriage took place at the home of her father, Frank Coburn. Said Lydia or Liddy was allwed pension as the widow of James Ross on her application executed April 22, 1849 at which time she eighty-four years of age and was living in Union County, North Carolina. She was living in that county in 1855. It was stated that they had twelve or thirteen children but only the following names were given: Elizabeth Griffin, aged sixty- seven or sixty-eight in 1860; Dugal; Polly; Nancy; Hugh; Francis; Liddy; Spicy; Sarah; Thomas; Margaret. The soldier's brother William was eighty-one years of age in 1851 and living in Anson County, North Carolina. One James Ross, born January 2, 1766 was living in Union County, North Carolina in 1851 and stated that he knew the soldier and his wife before they were married, no relationship given. One Frederick Coburn was living in 1850, aged about seventy-four years, but it was not stated that he was related to the widow. Very truly yours, A.D.
