I wished to have continued in the exercise of my office until after the session of the next Court of Conference, but I was apprehensive that there not then have been sufficient time left for the Assembly to deliberate on the choice of a successor. I flatter myself that my advanced age, which must render me inadequate to the discharge of the duties attached to that important office, will be considered by the General Assembly a sufficient apology for my resignation. Permit me, Sir, at the same time, thro' you to acknowledge to the General Assembly, the grateful sense I shall ever retain of the repeated marks of confidence and distinction, with which my fellow-citizens have honored me, from the earliest dawn of the Revolution to the present time; had my capacity been commensurate with my zeal for the public service, I should have nothing to regret, being conscious that I have never been deficient either in fidelity or industry in the execution of the various high and important trusts, which have from time to time been committed to my charge. I have now only, constantly, to offer up my prayers to the Almighty disposer of events, for the prosperity of my Country and the happiness of my fellow-citizens, and that each successive generation may be more wise and virtuous than their Ancestors, until they arrive at the highest degree of virtue and wisdom which human nature is capable of attaining, and that they may finally become an example worthy of the imitation of the other States and other nations. With all due respect, I have the honor to be Sir, Your Excellency's most Obedient Servant, SAMUEL JOHNSTON His Excellency, the Governor File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/martin/newspapers/judgejoh417nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ncfiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
