  DREADFUL MURDER OF MR. HADDOCKS
   From a letter received by us on Wednesday, from our valued friend, JOHN C. 
LAMB, ESQ., ESQ., of Williamston, we learn that a dreadful murder was 
committed in Martin County, on the 17th inst. The person killed was a MR. 
HADDOCKS, and the killing was done by a negro. The cause of the affair it 
appears originated in MR. HADDOCKS assisting a gentleman by the name of HURST -
- in chastising a negro when two of the negro's brothrs came up and one of 
them struck MR. HADDOCKS on the back part of his head, causing instant death, 
the other aimed a blow at MR. HURST, but it did not take effect, MR. HURST 
warding it off with a cane. The negroes then made their escape and had not, 
when MR. LAMB wrote, been apprehended -- Native Sentinal
