He was a native of Martin County, N.C., and in 1919 moved to Nansemond County, where he was a prosperous farmer. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Hamilton Johnson; eight daughters, Mrs. G.C. Biley of Bethel, N.C., Mrs. E.L. Morris of Pinetops, N.C., Mrs. Lonnie Wilkins of Holland, Mrs. Annie M. Britton of Portsmouth, Mrs. John W. Howell of Holland, Mrs. Linwood Pearce of Gordonsville, and Mrs. Roy C. Duke of Franklin; three sons, Sam and Robert L. Johnson of Franklin and Shepard Johnson Jr., of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. D.C. Cross of Oak City, N.C., and Mrs. Moses Robertson of Palmyra, N.C.; two brothers, James Johnson of Rocky Mount, N.C. , and Lester Johnson of Holland; 31 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at Holy Neck Christian Church, with Rev. H.E. Crutchfield and Rev. H.L. Foster officiating. Burial was in the Holland cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Parker, Emmett Piland, Allen Piland, J.J. Harcum, Ether March, Hilton Morgan, Harvey Worrell and Lewis Duke. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men’s Bible Class of Holy Neck Christian Church and friends.
