H. Bergen The Raleigh Standard, 24, Dec. 1862 DEATH OF CAPTAIN C. H. BERGEN Died, of typhoid fever, on the 30th of November at his father's residence in McDowell County, N. C., CAPTAIN CHARLES H. BERGIN, of the 22nd Regiment, N. C. Volunteers. He was among the first who responded to the call of his invaded country -- volunteering in May 1861. He entered the service as 1st Lieutenant, in which capacity he served most faithfully for more than 12 months. He was slightly injured by a fragment of a shell [near] Richmond and severely wounded at Shepherdstown. The latter injury unfitting him for service, he was granted a 20-day furlough. Some time in October he returned to his home in McDowell, where he was attacked by that fatal fever, which after weeks of suffering terminated his valuable life.
