Robert Irwin and Jane Parks McDowell Chapters of the DAR in the 1950s. It is a pamphlet that was typed and mimographed at the time. In 1975 when I started the "History of Central Steele Creek" I took a group to the cemetry and checked names and dates and added some information that was not included on the original record plus people who had been buried there from the 1950s to 1970s. Hope this is not to long for you. It will come to you over several messages. Linda Blackwelder BLACKSTOCK CEMETERY Information about the cemetery taken from: "A History of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church" by Linda Lawless Blackwelder, , Charlotte, NC, 1978. ( Blackstock Cemetery is located in York County, SC off of Highway 21 and Carowinds Blvd. approximately 1/2 mile from the North Carolina/South Carolina line. Members of the church were from upper York Co., SC and the Steele Creek area of Mecklenburg County, NC.) The church was sold in 1883 and relocated to the Steele Creek area of Mecklenburg County, NC. The old church was purchased by an AME church and moved on logs pulled by oxen to an area about 1 mile south of the original location of the church in York Co., SC) Time and vandalism is destroying the old cemetery which is enclosed by an old rock wall and wooden gate. The cemeter was established in 1793 at the time the Blackstock Church was founded. ( Steele Creek ARP-later known as Lower Steele Creek ARP) The stone wall was built in 1869 and or years, it was kept in a beautiful condition by Maj. W. W. Boyce. Major Boyce planted azaleas, mountain laurel and other plants among the granite rocks on the hillside going down to the old spring. Near the old spring, he had built a park area and today, there still stands in the underbrush, the remnants of the old rock oven used for picnecs near the spring. After the merging of Lower Steele Creek ARP and Steele Creek AP, to form Central Steele Creek ARP, the cemetery was used only by those members who had lived near by. The new church, Central SC ARP, was located on York Rd.in Mecklenburg County at the corner of now Westinghouse Blvd. In 1917, Central became to small to operate as a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church because so many members had moved into Charlotte. They affiated with the Presbyterian Church at that time. On May 1, 1928, the first meeting was held of the Blackstock Cemetery Association. The board of Trustees was elected and contributions were made that day to start a cemetery fund for the upkeep of the cemetery at the site of the old Blackstock Church. Over the years, the funds of $300 dwindled away and the Association ceased to exist around 1935. Since that time, the youth groups and Boy Scouts of Central Steele Creek have cleaned the cemetery from time to time, however since the 1970s, vandals have broken stones and the Huricane, Hugo, damaged the rock wall and many stones. Many of the old stones are becoming impossible to read. Following are the known graves in the cemetery: Eleanor Adams, age 14; d. Sept 3, 1821 John Adams, age 32, d.
