Co., NC that have been abandoned. They were copied by members of two DAR Chapters in Meck. Co. in the 1950s. Spratt Cemetery The Spratt Cemetry was on Spratt land some 400 yards back of the Spratt home at what is now the corner of Fourth and Caswell Rds. Tradition is that the cemetery was destroyed when Vail Ave. was opened for traffic. The stone were thrown into a gully and covered with 15 feet of dirt. When the nurses home for Merch Hospital was being built and excavating done for the basement four of these stones were found. The hospital gave the stones to the City Council. Mr. Victor Shaw was mayor and with his consent of the council, the four stones were place in a concrete base in the cemetery behind the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. They can be found to the left on the first walk as you enter the iron gate. (compiled by Mrs. Robert McDowell) The stones found and placed in the church cemetery were: Here lies the body of Esther Johnston who deceased Oct. 22nd. 1775, aged 31 years. Here lies the body of James McKnight who deceased Oct ye 23rd 1764, aged 60 years Here lies the body of Robert McKnight who deceased Oct. ye 19, 1778 aged 60 years. In Memory of Cathrine Peel who departed this life May 24, 1778, Age: 50 years. Other stones found: In memory of Andrew Sprot who died Nov 19, 1772 aged 64 years also here lys his wife Mary Sprot who died June 7th, 1771 aged 64 years. (it is thought that other Spratt (Sprot) members were buried in the cemetery but no stones remain) Here lies ye body of Hugh Bingham (Bigham) who departed this life Nov. ye 4th 1765 also nearby lies ye body of Joseph Bingham, a child. Here lies the body of Mary Bingham (Bigham) who deceased Jan. 18th 1772 aged 55 years Here lys the body of Samuel Bingham (Bigham) junr. who departed this life april 25th 1774 aged 33 years Here lies the body of Jean Barnett who deceased April 20th 1776 aged 20 years Here lies the body of Thos. Barnett who deceased may the 3rd 1776 aged 22 years Here lys the body of John Jack Barnett who deceased Jan 14th 1778 aged 9 months.
