He was born in Augusta County, Virginia, in 1750. He entered the service in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1774. He served under Colonel Thomas Polk and General Richardson in the Snow Campaign. Later he served as Lieutenant in Captain John Brownfield's company, General Griffith Rutherford's troops. He also served under Colonel Thomas Brandon, Colonel George Alexander, Colonel Adam Alexander, Colonel Phifer and Captain Jack, He served with General Griffith Rutherford in Cherokee Campaign. He was appointed Captain by General Thomas Sumter. He served in the battle of Monk's Corner, South Carolina.
