Potts, a well-known resident of this city, while commenting to some hearers a few days ago on the present unsettled conditions and the prospective hard times, facetiously remarked that he would buy live snakes, paying from $1 for the common black snake, to $5 for rattlers. His offer, going the rounds, reached the ears of an old darky who saw therein the opportunity to pick up a few dollars as side-money in these times when snakes are plentiful and dollars are scarce. Bunching his wits, the old negro man soon had a good sized black snake and a smaller moccasin in captivity and made haste to town to receive the reward. In the presence of a number of his fellow citizens, it was hard for Mr. Potts to make explanations and he finally compromised with the darky by paying him 25 cents for his trouble. Mr. Potts has withdrawn his offer, but the old darky assured him that other industrious snake catchers were at work and probably would have reptiles galore on the market within the next few days.
