The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) February 15, 1898
While the county commissioners were in session Monday, one Will Creighton, of
No. 9 township, appeared before the board and reported that his wife was
violently insane and asked for assistance. The unfortunate woman was ordered
taken to the county home, and yesterday five men conveyed Mrs Creighton there.
On arriving there she was raving, not a maniac, but justly so, from imposition.
She was retained by Mr Barnheardt, the keeper, however, and today Dr J S
Lafferty, the county physician, examined the woman, pronouncing her sane. She
tells a pitiful story. Her husband had brutally beaten her, evidences of which
she bore by the several scars and bruises on her face, head and body.
