Aug. 3, 1838  Charlotte Journal
   DIED, on the 23rd inst., JOSIAH W. BOYES of an injury received from the 
bursting of a Cannon at our late National Anniversary.
   The Teachers and Students of the Union Academy, of which MR. BOYES has for 
some time been a member, united in the following expression:
   1st Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the immediate relatives of the 
deceased, in their bereavement of one, who gave them so much promise of much 
comfort and honor.
   2nd That we cordially regret the stroke, which has deprived us all of one 
who was endeared to his acquaintences and fellow students, by rather unusaual 
social virtues and intellectual endowments.
   3rd That in the death of MR. J. M. BOYES, who had well night finished the 
usual collegiate preparation, society has lost a member, who bade fair to 
occupy a place of eminence and usefulness.
   4th That in memory of the deceased, we wear crape on the lfeft arms 15 days.
