Mecklenburg Co. NC obituary of William W. Elms-1871 From: J & S Matthews I have another obituary to submit. It is for William W. Elms who was a prominent merchant in Charlotte from the 1840's until his death in 1871. In fact, he was the third most wealthy man in Charlotte according to the 1850 census. Unfortunately, he lost his wealth by investing in construction of the plank road to Lincolnton just before the railroad was built in the 1850's. Janie Elms Matthews ----------------------- The Charlotte Southern Home issue of April 18, 1871: "In this city, on the 16th last, Mr. W.W. Elms, an old citizen, and one who has done much towards building up this city. His age was 61 years." ==================================================================== USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
