Hayes of Shopton, one of the most prominent citizens in that part of the county died yesterday afternoon at 6 20 after an illness that has kept him in bed for the past eight weeks. The deceased was stricken shortly more than two months ago with an affliction in his face that continually baffled the physicians and although he was operated on a few days ago and seemed to improve to some extent it was again soon evident that the seat of the trouble had not been reached and he lingered at death's door until yesterday afternoon when the end peacefully came. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife and two daughtres Misses Maud and Ruth Hayes who have constantly been at his bedside during the long and trying period of his illness. Four sisters Mesdames John Moody, Charlie Todd, W.J. Byrum and Henry Taggart all of the county and two brothers Mesers Charles and Isaac Hayes of the county also survive. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, the pastor Rev. John W. Orr haveing charge of the exercises. The pall bearers will be Messrs W.A. Grier, C.B. Campbell, Frank Byrum, S.H. Grier, Elam Griffith and I.B. Ferris. The following named will serve as honorary pall bearers Mesers S.G. Grier, W.M. Summerville, J.M. Taylor, S.W. Whitesides, John Robinson and R.C. Freeman. Mr. Hayes was one of the best known men in the county. For the past 31 years he has been engaged in the mercantile business at Shopton and during that long period he built up a fine trade abiding always in the respect and confidence of his neighbors and those with whom he had to do in a business way. He was a consistent member of the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church and his walk and conversation was that of an upright and godly citizen.
