H. T. HOOVER. ----- BREVARD STREET CHURCH MOURNS ----- After an Illness of Six Weeks the Pastor Passes Away--Three Visits From the Death Angel in Ministerial Ranks Since May. The ministry of Charlotte has for the third time since May been sorely bereaved. "The one clear call" came in May for Dr. Pritchard, in September for Dr. Preston, and in October for Rev. Henry Thomas Hoover, pastor of Brevard Street Methodist church. Mr. Hoover died yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock at his home on East Ninth street, of typhoid feverl. He was taken sick six weeks ago, and as soon as he learned that he had fever, he remarked to his family that he would never be well again; that he was going to die. Week after week passed and there was no improvement. He was attended by skilled physicians, and had the constant care and attention which a devoted wife could give, but it was not the Master's will that this laborer in His vineyard should be spared. Last week the brain became affected, and he became unconscious, remaining so up to the time of his death. One did not associated death with Mr. Hoover, he was so strong and active. He was decoted to his work, and during his short residence here had done much to awaken interest and enthusiasm in his congregation and to make them a people zealous of good works. He has been taken away in the midst of a useful career, but his family and congregation "knowing in whom they have believed," have trusted all to Him against that day. Bright, trustful and happy, this servent of God was useful in winning souls. He was a man of fine sense, pleasant to meet in and out of the church. His ministry has given Brevard Street church an impetus, and the good he did will live for many years after him. Rev. Henry Thomas Hoover was born in Catawba county, N. C., Sept. 4, 1860. He graduated at Roanoke College, Salem, Va., winning the orator's medal. After spending a year in the theological department at Vanderbilt University, he was admitted on trial in the Western North Carolina Conference, at Concord, in 1890. He traveled the Swananoa circuit three years, served the Henrietta station two years, and was appointed to Brevard Street station December, 1895. He was married April 5, 1893, to Miss Beulah Hoofnagle, who, with one child, survives him. He was a faithful, efficient minister of the gospel; greatly beloved by all the people whom he served. The Western North Carolina Conference sustains a serious loss in his death. The funeral service will be held this morning in Brevard Street Methodist church, at 10:30 o'clock. The pastors of the city churches and the public generally are invited to attend. The interment will take place in Elmwood cemetery. The pall-bearers are Messrs. H. C. Herring, J. A. Pickard, G. A. Page, M. F. Kirby, W. A. Owens and M. E. Crowell. Mr. Hoover was a member of the Knights of Pythias, and will be buried with Pythian honors, both lodges attending the services. His brother knights attended him in his illness, and bore all expense of nursing and burial. he was insured for a thousand or two thousand dollars.
