S. F. HOUSTON DEAD. The End of a Long and Good Life Came Yesterday--Funeral Services To-Day. Mr. S. F. Houston died at his residence at 317 West Eighth street yesterday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock. He had been ill with paralysis for the last five years, but his condition was not desperate until last Friday. Since that time he grew gradually worse until the end. He retained consciousness until 20 minutes before his death, which he met bravely and peacefully-surrounded by all the members of his family. Mr. Houston was born in January, 1830, and was, therefore, in his seventy- second year. When quite young he moved to Charlotte and had lived here continuously for over 50 years. In early life he was connected with the Southern Express Company, but for 30 or more years and until he was stricken with paralysis, he was in commercial life, having been a traveling salesman for several large concerns. Mr. Houston had been almost a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church and at the time of his death was a member of the Second Presbyterian church of this city. He was an honest, upright man, conscientious in all duties of life, liked and respected by all who knew him, a faithful Christian and a tender and loving husband, father and friend. He married Miss Sarah McGilvary, of Eastover, S. C., who with seven children, survives: Mrs. N. L. Savage and Mrs. J. W. Roard, of Charlotte; Mrs. J. H. Bass, of Anderson, S. C.; Mr. B. F. Houston, of Fayetteville, Tenn; Mr. Samuel Houston and Misses Sarah and Grace Harding Houston, of Charlotte. The funeral services will take place at the residence this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock and will be conducted by Revs. J. R. Howerton and George W. Belk. The pall-bearers will be: Judge A. Burwell, and Messrs. A. C. Summerville, G. S. Johnson, D. W. Oates, J. B. Ross, J. M. Hunter and J. F. Jamison.
