S. M. HOWELL DIES AT HOME OF HER SON Funeral This Afternoon From First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Howell, widow of the late Stephen M. Howell and one of Charlotte's oldest residents, died last night at 8 o'clock at the home of her son, Mr. George A. Howell, on South Tryon street. She was nearly 87 years old. the infirmities common to that age had confined her to her room for a considerable period and for the past few days her life had ebbed steadily away. The funeral will be conducted this afternoon at 5 o'clock from the First Presbyterian Church of which she was a zealous member. The pastor, Rev. Dr. D. H. Rolston, will be in charge of the service. the deacons will be active pallbearers and the elders will be honorary pallbearers. The children of the primary department of the Sunday school will meet in their rooms at 4:30 to attend the service in a body. Mrs. Howell was born in Columbia, S. C., October 29, 1827 and was educated there. She was the daughter of William T. and Martha Elizabeth Little. She was married there in 1844 to Stephen M. Howell of New Jersey, who had arrived in Columbia two years earlier, in 1842. They moved to Charlotte in 1853 and for the 61 years that had since intervened she had been a Charlotte resident. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Howell. Of these three sons died in early life. The surviving children are Mrs. L. W. Sanders, Mrs. Jasper Miller and Mr. George A. Howell. Surviving also are the following grandchildren: Mr. H. H. Orr, Mrs. S. O. Brookes, Mr. Harry Sanders, Mrs. O. L. Watts, Mr. G. Lawrence Hiller, Mrs. Otis K. Asbury of Richmond, Va., Miss Louise Miller, Mr. Stephen Miller, Miss Nina Howell, Mr. Wallace Howell, Mrs. Thomas fuller, Mr. George A. Howell, Jr., Miss Mary Sanders Howell and Harvey Howell. There are 10 great grandchildren: Misses Madeline, Adelaide, and Harriett Orr, James Harvey Orr and Albert Orr, Laurence Lee Miller, Nancy Overton Watts, William Miller Watts, Stephen Lawson Asbury and Thomas Fuller, Jr. Originally a member of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Howell transferred her membership to the Presbyterian denomination after marriage. In Columbia she was connected with the church of the celebrated Doctor Palmer. Immediately on coming to Charlotte she united with what is now the First Presbyterian Church. It was then known merely as the Pesbyterian Church. She became interested especially in the Sunday school and there wrought a work which will not soon be forgotten. She was the organizer of the primary department, the cradle roll and throughout the remainder of her days of activity she gave freely of her time and strength to further this work. Never was she absent from church or Sunday school unless unavoidably detained. In all these interests she was a tower of strength which was keenly missed when her health became feeble. Her church and her home were the two great interests that claimed the attention of Mrs. Howell and she gave herself unreservedly to both. She was a woman of strong character, having a fine mind, united with strength of will. In impulse and in act she was ever the true Christian woman.
