HENRY L. HUNTER DIED YESTERDAY ----- Was a Woman of Bright Mind and Lovable Character-Funeral Today. Mrs. Elizabeth Petitt Hunter, wife of Mr. Henry Lee Hunter, died at St. Peter's Hospital yesterday morning at 3:30 o'clock after a week's illness with pneumonia. Mrs. Hunter was removed from her home, 313 East Seventh street, last Thursday to St. Peter's. Sunday she became alarmingly ill but on Monday she appeared to be slightly more comfortable. She was conversing with several of the members of her family who were watching at her bedside when she died suddenly. The news of Mrs. Hunter's death came as a great shock to her hundreds of friends, as few realized her condition. Mrs. Hunter was the daughter of Henry M. Pettit and Jane M. A. Bell of frederick, Md. Her father was a noted railroad builder of the pioneer age of railroading. Among other achievements was the construction of the first or original section of the Baltimore & Railroad with headquarters at Cumberland, Md. Mr. Pettit was married to Miss Jane M. A. Bell of Frederick, Md. Mrs. Hunter was born in Cumberland, Md., January 22, 1847. Mr. Pettit was later made president of the Frederick Bank and afterwards made his home there. Mrs. Hunter met Mr. Hunter during the Civil War. Mr. Hunter, who is a native of South Carolina, was in the service of the Confederate Army. They were married October 29, 1868. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter have been residents of Charlotte for 15 years of more. Prior to moving to the city they lived near Hopewell Church and later at Sardis. They were among the first residents of Myers Park, moving from there to the present home on East Seventh street. Mrs. Hunter is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. William Anderson of Frederick, Md., and Messrs. malcolm B. and Hary P. Hunter of this city. Two sisters and a brother, Mrs. J. W. Floyd of Liberty Hill, S. C., Mrs. Belle P. Matthews of Frederick and Mr. William B. Pettit of Seattle, Wash., survive. There are also four grandchildren, william Turner Anderson and Lee Hunter Andnerson who have been making their home with their grandparents, Alexander Anderson of Frederick, Md., and Mrs. Floyd L. Strawn of Washington. Mrs. Strawn, who was Miss Zoe Anderson, made her home with her grandparents prior to her marriage. Mrs. Anderson accompanied by her son, Alex, arrived in the city yesterday at noon from Frederick, Md., to attend her mother's funeral. Mrs. Anderson was delayed six hours at Salisbury on account of a wreck. Miss Bessie and Mr. Fred Floyd of Liberty Hill, S. C., niece and nephew of Mrs. Hunter, will arrive in the city this morning to attend the funeral this afternoon. Mrs. Hunter was a woman of brilliant mind. She was graduated from the Frederick Woman's College, now Hood College. She afterwards taught school. She had a wide knowledge of history and was formerly historian of the Battle of Charlotte Chapter, Daughters of the American Revoltion. Mr. Hunter was a member of the Mecklenburg Chapter prior to the organization of the Charlotte chapter, she being a charter member of the latter. She was a valued member of the Eclectic Book Club and one of the most active members of the Stonewall Jackson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Hunter was a woman of the highest type of character, gentle, kind and wholly unselfish. Possessing a bright cheerful disposition, she was a welcome member of any circle. She was a devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. The funeral services will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. rev. Robert tufft, the rector, will conduct the service. The interment will occur at Elmwood cemetery. The pallbearers will be Messrs. W. E. Price, S. A. Tompkins, O. J. Thies, H. M. Victor, Herlot Clarkson, W. S. Alexander, Drs. I. W. Faison and J. W. Summers.
