April 23, 1840  Charlotte Journal
   DIED, in Charlotte, on Wednesday morning last, MR. ASHER JONES, in the 26th 
year of his age, son of MR. LEOPOLD JONES, formerly of Richmond, Va., leaving 
a fond mother and other relatives besides a large circle of acquaintances. MR. 
JONES, who was bar keeper at the Mansion House, has been laboring under 
asthma, and a violent palpitation of the heart, but so great was his objection 
to yielding to disease that he continued to endeaver to attend to business 
until Friday last, when he found himself compelled to give up and being, no 
doubt, aware of his dissolution, he returned home to his friends, to receive 
that attention which none but a mother can give. He bore hs suffering without 
a murmur. His remains were attended to the grave by a large collection of 
citizens and by the Independent Grays, of which company he was a member.
