He was a member of CAPT. ALEXANDER'S COMPANY, from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, (56th North Carolina Regiment, Company K). His disease was typhoid fever. Although he died far from home and friends, he died in full hopes of meeting them in heaven. He was an affectionate brother and obedient son. The following is a letter to his father from the Captain: "Sir: -- I am sorry, indeed, to inform you of the death of your son, JAMES MINOR MARTIN, who died on last Sunday in the hospital in Petersburg, Va. of fever. I certainly can offer to you, as a bereaved parent, the sympathy of both officers and men of my company, who knew him well and can testify to his many manly virtues. But it certainly will be a consolation to know that he has fallen in the hospital, and not in the field; yet he is nevertheless a martyr to his country's cause. In him you have lost a son, and the Confederacy an excellent soldier."
