D.W. Mayes, 92 year old Confederate veteran, will be held this afternoon at Ramah Presbyterian Church near Huntersville at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Colonel Mayes, who was commander of the Mecklenburg camp, United States Confederate Veterans, died Saturday morning after a two day illness of influenza. Colonel Mayes, who fought with Lee in northern Virginia and later served in the North Carolina General Assembly, was born near West Springs, SC on August 22, 1846, the son of Mr and Mrs Sam Mayes. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Williams of Glenn Springs, SC in 1867 and he moved to Charlotte in 1875. He had been an elder in the Ramah church for 62 years. His second wife was Miss Henrietta Sloan and his third wife was Miss Virginia Sloan. Colonel Mayes joined the Confederate army after the battle of Seven Pines near Richmond, VA after his two brothers had been killed. He saw action at Charleston, SC and in the Shenandoah campaign of the Wilderness. He was a member of the North Carolina legislature in 1881 and was honored by the current general sssembly at its recent meeting in Charlotte. He was seated on the rostrum with Governors Hoey of North Carolina and Maybank of South Carolina. He was the only honorary member of the Charlotte Hornets Nest Post of the American Legion. He is survived by four sons, George S Mayes of Charlotte, by his first marriage; and Glenn R, Will S, and Lamont Mayes all of the Ramah section, sons of his third marriage to Miss Virginia Sloan in 1874. He is also survived by 16 grand children and four great grand childern. Rev. John Grier pastor of the Ramah church will conduct the funeral service and interment will follow in the church cemetery.
