The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 24 June 1898
Jim Pagan, colored, who was waylaid and shot Saturday night, the 4th of June, in
rear of Rev J A Dorritee's in Dilworth died last night. It was hoped he would
regain consciousness long enough to give some clue to the murder, but he did
not. He was evidently murdered for his money, but the robber did not succeed in
getting it, as Pagan had it in his boot. He had $17.50 in his boot.
