Potts, one of the finest specimens of physical manhood which the county of Mecklenburg afforded, dropped dead yesterday morning between 11 and 12 o'clock in front of his store in Steele Creek township. Heart failure is presumed to have been the cause of death, as no other hypothesis is supported by any known facts. He had never made an complaint of heart trouble or any other derangement. He had never been sick. Mr. Potts was about 30 years of age. He was six feet three inches tall, being one of the tallest men in this section, and strong in proportion, being well proportioned and superbly muscled. He was a young man of fine character and was highly esteemed by a legion of friends. Mr. Potts was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Potts of Steele Creek, by whom he is survived in addition to five brothers and four sisters. For several years he was in the employ of Saco & Pettee, manufacturers of cotton mill machinery, being under Mr. A.H. Washburn of this city, Southern agent for that concern. He spent five years in Maine, studying machinery and became an expert in his field. He represented this company on the road in the North for a year or two and was connected with it in a similar capacity in the South, spending considerable time in Charlotte where he made numerous friends. About a year ago he retired from this work and opened a general store near his home, where he had since enjoyed a prosperous business. He was unmarried. The suddenness of Mr. Potts' death was a source of wonderment to his friends. He had taken a short ride on the motorcycle of an acquaintance with whom he was conversing and was just preparing to remount when he fell. There was not enough exercise involved in the act to connect it in any way with his sudden summons, particularly as he was accustomed to vigorous exercise. The funeral service will be conducted this morning at 11 o'clock at Steele Creek Presbyterian church, in which Mr. J.W. Potts is an elder, by Rev. W.A. Cleveland, the pastor.
