[1] ------------------- Death Notices ------------------- MRS. LOLA (DODO) VINSON ROBERTS Mrs. Lola (Dodo) Vin- son Roberts, widow of Mr. George H. Roberts of Charlotte, died Wednesday, January 10th, 1986 at Charlotte Me- morial Hospital, Mrs. Roberts was born Jan- uary 14t, 1900 in Savan- nah, GA daughter of the late Charles Vinson and Julia Bliss Vinson. Mrs. Roberts was former owner and president of George W. Roberts Lumber Company. She and her husband were instrumental in the es- tablishment of Vinson Realty Company. She was very active in the beginnings of the Uni- versity of North Caro- lina at Chalotte, and arranged for her schol- arhip to be used for many students in ob- taining a college educa- tion. She was a member of Myers Park Presby- terian Church, Myers Park Country Club, Charlotte City Club, and Charlotte Chapter of Daughters of the Confeder- acy. Her great-uncle was Mr. Carl Vinson, the oldest United States Respresentative in history and the person for whom Carl Vinson Aircraft Carrier was named. Funeral ser- vices will be held 11 AM, Friday, January 10, 1986 at Harry Bryant Chapel in Oaks. Dr. William McLean, Minister of Myers Park Presbyteri- an Church, will offici- ate. Intombment will be in Sharon Mausoleum. Sur- vivors include nephew, Ed L. Vinson of Char- lotte; one great-neph- ew, Edward L. Vinson III of Charlotte; and great-niece, Mrs. S. Straughn of Charlotte. [2] Early UNCC Benefactor Lola Vinson Roberts, 85 By Sylvester Scipio Staff Writer In UNCC's early years, Lola Vinson Roberts's donations were instrucmental in the university's development. "She was a very delightful lady and a very valuable supporter," said Bonnie Cone, UNCC vice chancellor emeritus. Mrs. Roberts, 85, of 2118 Conis- ton Place, died Wednesday at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. A Savannah native, she was for- mer owner and president of Geoge Roberts Lumber Co. and assisted in the establishment of Vinson Realty Co. Cone said Mrs. Roberts was a "founding patron of excellence," at UNCC in 1967. She gave money in the form of a scholarship for UNCC students in her husband's name, George Roberts. Cone said the school began giv- ing the scholarship in 1967 to needy students. "There is no designated field for recipients," she said. " It was and still is given to needy students." Her great-uncle was the late Carl Vinson, the Georgia congress- man who, when he retired in 1965, held the record for length of ser- vice-50 years-as a U.S. represenative and as chairman of the House Naval Affairs Commit- tee. An aircraft carrier was named for him. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Myers Park Country Club and Charlotte City Club. Survivors are a nepehw, Ed Vinson; great- nephew, Edward Vinson III; great-niece, Sheri Straughn. Her funeral is 11 a.m. today at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Rd., with burial at Sharon Memorial Park and Mauso- leum, 5400 Monroe Rd. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
