   It is with regret we state that on Friday week, MR. WILLIAM N. SPEARS of 
Mecklenburg was killed by the falling of a tree. He had been assisting at a 
chopping at a neighbor's -- a tree had lodged and they cut others on it to 
bring it down, when the whole fell and the butt of one of the trees bounded up 
and struck him in the side and knocked him down and when it fell back, it 
struck him on the head and mashed it into the ground. MR. SPEARS was an 
unassuming man and a good citizen and was highly respected by all who knew him.
