Jas. Symons at His Home Last Night Col. James Symons, one of Charlotte's old residents, and a gentleman who was well known throughout this section of the State, died at his home, on West Trade street, at ten o'clcok last night. Col. Symons was stricken with paralysis about two years ago and had never regained his health. He was about 65 years of age. He was born in England and came to this country when quite a young man, identifying himself at once with the mining interests of North Carolina. He was one of the pioneers of the Ducktown mine, having been instrumental in opening and developing that mine. In this venture he was quite successful. He worked the mine up to a paying basis, and then sold it for $15,000 in gold. He put this gold in a pair of saddle bags and mounting a horse, brought it from Ducktown to Charlotte. He often spoke of this incident of his first arrival in Charlotte with $15,000 of his own cash. Col. Symons was for a long time superintendent of the Silver Hill mine, in Davidson County, the mine which was taken possession of by the Confederate government during the war, and worked for lead to make bullets. Col. Symons had been a resident of Charlotte for about twenty years, and won the respect of everybody who knew him. He was modest in his demeanor, and was thoroughly upright and honest in all his dealings. He was never married, but leaves a number of relatives in the city, including Mr. Thomas Symons, a younger brother. The funeral services over the remains of Col. Symons will be conducted with Masonic honors from St. Peter's Episcopal churh, corner of Seventh and Tryon streets, at four o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
