MECKLENBERG COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Charles Daniel Thornton, 26 Apr 2003 ----¤¤¤¤---- Charles D. Thornton Charles Daniel Thornton, 74, YNC U.S. Navy Retired, of Jobe Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. Thornton was a native of Charlotte, N.C., and a son of the late Lister and Anne Clarke Thornton. Mr. Thornton was a 1957 graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte, N.C. He served two years in the National Guard before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, and retired after serving 22 years with the Navy. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and was on the Council Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver and was a Disabled American Veteran. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Freeman Thornton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Daniel Jr. and Kelly Thornton, Greeneville, and Michael Brandon Thornton, of the home; a brother, David Thornton, Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Kayla Anne Thornton and Bradley Cade Thornton. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. THORNTON -- Funeral services for Charles Daniel Thornton, 74, YNC U.S. Navy Retired, of Jobe Road, Elizabethton, who died Saturday, April 26, 2003, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. John Martin officiating. Music will be provided by The Sounds of Victory. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home, with Military Graveside Honors conducted by the Naval Reserve Center, Asheville, N.C. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence.
