Charlotte Observer: Yesterday afternoon about 1 o'clock, a fire alarm called the
fire department to 508 East First street. Fannie White, a wash-woman at the
Central hotel lives there. She and her daughter, Minnie, both left the house
yesterday morning and went about their work. The house was locked and a little 5
year old girl, Amanda White, was left inside. From some cause or other the house
caught fire from the inside. Within a few minutes the child was burned to a
crisp. The firemen worked in earnest to save her alive, but in vain.
