PENLAND CEMETERY

LOCATION: This cemetery is on a ridge top ENE of downtown Bakersville, 
and is visible from several points there. There is no access road, but 
one way to go there is to drive east on the Cane Creek highway, and turn 
left onto River Trail Road, which is a dirt road that follows a stream. 
After a few yards turn right up a steep dirt road. Drive past the first 
house on your left. You will see an abandoned house up ahead at this point.  
Park where you can here. The cemetery is up on the hill top above you on 
your right, through the pines. The easiest way is to walk up the small
valley between the two hills, into the pines. Then climb the steep hill 
on your right; you will shortly see the stones.  

ACCESSIBILITY: Very difficult! This should be done in dry weather, and 
only by fit persons.

CONDITION: The cemetery has not been used in over 70 years, but is 
currently being restored. The view from there is stunning.
